Common questions about the tasbih after prayer and how to teach it to your child.

What is the tasbih after prayer?

After each of the five daily prayers, Muslims recite a short remembrance of Allah called the tasbih: SubhanAllah (Glory be to Allah) 33 times, Alhamdulillah (All praise is for Allah) 33 times, and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest) 33 times.

It is then completed with the tahlil to make 100. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that whoever does this has their small sins forgiven.

How many times do you say each phrase in the tasbih?

Each of the three phrases is said 33 times: SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 33 times. That makes 99. The tahlil, said once at the end, completes the count to 100.

What is the tahlil that completes the tasbih?

The tahlil is: La ilaha illa Allah, wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu-l-mulk wa lahu-l-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir.

It means: There is no god but Allah, alone, with no partner. His is the kingdom and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. It is said once to complete the tasbih to 100.

Can children do the tasbih after prayer?

Yes. The tasbih is a simple, beautiful habit for children to learn. Counting each phrase, often on the fingers or on prayer beads, helps a child slow down and remember Allah after their prayer. Doing it together as a family makes it a warm daily routine.

Do you need prayer beads for the tasbih?

No. Prayer beads (called a misbaha or tasbih) help with keeping count, but they are not required. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions counted on their fingers, and counting on the right hand is a beautiful sunnah.

Beads, fingers, or this counter all work, whatever helps your child keep track and stay focused on the words.

How can I help my child do the tasbih after salah?

Make it part of finishing every prayer. Sit together right after salah and count the first few of each phrase out loud with your child, then let them continue on their fingers. Even a shortened count is a wonderful beginning for a young child.

Doing it side by side turns the tasbih into a calm, shared moment of remembrance after each prayer.
