أَذَان
Adhan
a-THAANThe call to prayer, announcing that it is time for salah.

عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَام
Alayhi as-salam
a-LAY-hi as-sa-LAAMPeace be upon him. Said after the names of the other prophets and the angels, such as Ibrahim, Musa, Isa and Jibril. For a group, alayhim as-salam: peace be upon them.

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّٰه
Alhamdulillah
al-ham-du-LIL-lahAll praise is for Allah. Said to give thanks, and after sneezing.

ٱللَّٰه
Allah
al-LAHThe Arabic name for God, the One who created everything.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّٰه
Bismillah
bis-MIL-lahIn the name of Allah. Said before beginning something, like eating, travelling or starting work.

ذِكْر
Dhikr
THIK-rRemembering Allah through the day, with the heart and with words.

دُعَاء
Dua
doo-AHA personal prayer or request to Allah, in any language, at any time.

غُسْل
Ghusl
GHUSLA full-body washing, required in specific situations.

إِيمَان
Iman
ee-MAANFaith: what a Muslim believes, summed up in the six pillars of faith.

إِن شَاءَ ٱللَّٰه
InshaAllah
in-shaa-AL-lahIf Allah wills. Said about something planned for the future.

مَسْجِد
Masjid
MAS-jidA mosque: a place where Muslims pray together and learn.

ٱلْقُرْآن
Quran
qur-AANThe holy book of Islam, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

رَكْعَة
Rakat
RAK-ahOne unit of prayer: standing, bowing and prostrating. Every salah is built from them.

صَلَاة
Salah
SA-lahThe formal prayer Muslims perform five times a day, at set times.

صَلَّى ٱللَّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam (ﷺ)
sal-lal-LAA-hu a-LAY-hi wa SAL-lamMay Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him. Said after the name of the Prophet Muhammad, and written as ﷺ. In English it is often shortened to “peace be upon him” or PBUH.

شَهَادَة
Shahada
sha-HAA-dahThe declaration of faith: there is no god but Allah, and Muhammad ﷺ is His Messenger.

سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّٰه
SubhanAllah
sub-HAA-nal-lahGlory be to Allah. Said in wonder, and as part of dhikr.

سُجُود
Sujood
su-JOODProstration: placing the forehead on the ground in prayer.

سُورَة
Surah
SOO-rahA chapter of the Quran.

تَكْبِير
Takbir
tak-BEERSaying Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest). It opens every prayer.

وُضُوء
Wudu
wu-DOOThe washing done before prayer: hands, mouth, nose, face, arms, head, ears and feet.
