Evening Dhikr

🌙 Adhkar to close the day

What are the evening adhkar? They are the short remembrances the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us to say once the afternoon turns, closing the day the same way we opened it — with Allah. Here are six of them, word by word, small enough to finish before bed.

1 / 6

Amsayna wa amsal-mulku lillah

Say it once
أَمْسَيْنَاAmsayna وَأَمْسَىwa amsa الْمُلْكُl-mulku لِلَّهِlillah وَالْحَمْدُwal-hamdu لِلَّهِlillah
We have reached the evening, and all the kingdom belongs to Allah. All praise is for Allah.
The evening twin of the morning dhikr. The day is finished, and everything in it still belongs to Allah.

Glory be to Allah, and all praise is His.
The same three words you said this morning. The Prophet ﷺ paired them: a hundred times when the day begins, a hundred times when it ends.

I take shelter in the perfect words of Allah from the harm of everything He has made.
The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says this three times in the evening will not be harmed that night. This is the one to say when the dark feels big.

Then read the three Quls

The Prophet ﷺ would read Surah al-Ikhlas, Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas three times each in the morning and in the evening, and said they are enough to protect you from everything. Read them with Sofia before you head to bed.

Start tomorrow the same way

Dhikr works in pairs. The morning adhkar are almost the same words, with the first one swapped, so a child who knows this page is already most of the way through that one.

For Parents

Common questions about the evening adhkar and how to teach them to your child.

What are the evening adhkar?

The evening adhkar are the short remembrances of Allah that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught his companions to say at the close of each day. Most of them are the evening wording of the same adhkar said at dawn, so a child who learns one set has almost learned both.

This page carries six: Amsayna wa amsal-mulku lillah, Subhanallahi wa bihamdih, A’udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq, Allahumma bika amsayna, Bismillahilladhi la yadurru, and La ilaha illa Allahu wahdah.

When should the evening adhkar be said?

The window for the evening adhkar opens after the Asr prayer and runs until the light is gone. Saying them before Maghrib is best.

Families with a late routine often say them at bedtime instead, and that still counts. An evening that ends in dhikr is the goal, not a stopwatch.

What is the difference between the morning and evening adhkar?

Mostly one word. Asbahna ("we have reached the morning") becomes Amsayna ("we have reached the evening"), and the rest of the sentence stays the same. That is why children pick up the second set so quickly.

A few adhkar belong to one end of the day. A’udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq, on this page, is specifically the evening one — the Prophet ﷺ promised that whoever says it three times at nightfall will not be harmed until morning.

What should a child say before going to sleep?

The evening adhkar are said before sunset, and the sleeping dua is said in bed, at the last moment before the eyes close. They are two different things, and a child can do both.

Our dua before sleep page has the bedtime one, with audio and word-by-word Arabic.

How many times should each evening dhikr be repeated?

It varies by dhikr: some once, some three times, some a hundred. Each card on this page shows its own count, and the adhkar with large sunnah counts are set to three so a child can actually finish them.

Treat three as the beginner setting. As your child grows, move them toward the counts named in the hadith.

How can I make evening dhikr part of the bedtime routine?

Put it before the part your child likes most — the story, the last cuddle. Dhikr placed just ahead of something they are looking forward to gets done without a fight.

Keep it to two or three adhkar on tired nights. Consistency at a small size beats a full set that collapses after a week.
