Long, long ago, Allah sent a prophet named Nuh (peace be upon him) to his people. They had forgotten Allah and started worshipping statues that they had made with their own hands.

Nuh loved his people and wanted them to be safe and happy. So he told them kindly, "O my people, worship Allah alone. He made you, He loves you, and only He can help you."

Nuh called his people to Allah for a very, very long time, night and day, quietly and out loud. A few people listened and believed. But most of them only laughed at him and covered their ears.

Still, Nuh never gave up. He was patient for many, many years. This is why we remember him as one of the most patient prophets of all.

Then Allah told Nuh something surprising: "Build a big ship." So Nuh began to build a giant ark, far away from any sea. The people walked past and laughed even harder. "Look at Nuh, building a boat on dry land!" they joked.

But Nuh trusted Allah, and he kept building. When the great ark was finally ready, Allah told him to bring aboard the believers, and a pair, one male and one female, of every kind of animal.

Then the rain came. Water poured down from the sky and gushed up from the ground, until it covered everything. The great ark floated safely on top of the water, carrying Nuh, the believers, and all the animals, kept safe by Allah.

When the storm finally ended and the water went down, the ark came to rest on a mountain. A new and better life began for everyone who had believed and trusted in Allah.

What this story teaches us

Nuh (peace be upon him) teaches us patience and trust. He kept doing the right thing for years, even when people laughed at him, because he trusted Allah completely. When we hold on to what is right and put our trust in Allah, He always takes care of us.

From the story of Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) in the Quran, told in Surah Nuh (71), Surah Hud (11), and Surah Al-Mu'minun (23).

Who was Prophet Nuh (Noah)?

Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him), known in English as Noah, was one of the earliest prophets Allah sent to guide people. His community had begun worshipping idols they made themselves, so Allah sent Nuh to call them back to worshipping Allah alone. He is remembered above all for his patience: he continued to call his people gently and sincerely for a very long time. He is honored in Islam as one of the five greatest prophets (the Ulul-Azm).

What is the story of Nuh's ark?

Prophet Nuh called his people to worship Allah alone for many years, but most of them mocked him and refused. By Allah's command, Nuh built a great ark, even though people laughed at him for building a boat on dry land. When it was ready, Allah told him to bring aboard the believers and a pair of every kind of animal. Then a great flood came, water pouring from the sky and rising from the earth. The ark floated safely, and Allah saved Nuh, the believers, and the animals. When the water went down, the ark came to rest on a mountain and a new life began.

Why did Prophet Nuh build the ark?

Nuh built the ark because Allah commanded him to. After many years of patiently calling his people to the truth, most of them still refused and mocked him. Allah decreed a great flood, and told Nuh to build the ark so that the believers and a pair of every animal would be saved. The ark was a rescue and a mercy for those who believed, and a sign of Allah's power. Nuh trusted Allah and obeyed, even when his people laughed at him for building a ship far from any sea.

What animals were on Nuh's ark?

The Quran says Allah commanded Nuh to bring aboard a pair, a male and a female, of every kind, along with the believers among his family and followers. This is why the story is so beloved by children: alongside the people, the ark carried animals of every sort, kept safe together until the flood passed. It is a beautiful picture of Allah's care for all of His creation, not just people.

Where is the story of Nuh in the Quran?

The story of Prophet Nuh appears in many places in the Quran. There is an entire surah named after him, Surah Nuh (chapter 71). His story is also told in detail in Surah Hud (chapter 11), Surah Al-Mu'minun (chapter 23), and Surah Al-Qamar (chapter 54), among others. Because it appears so often, the story of Nuh is one of the most complete prophet stories in the Quran, and one of the first that children learn.

How can I teach the story of Nuh to my child?

Focus on the two gentle lessons at the heart of the story: patience and trust in Allah. Nuh kept doing the right thing for years, even when people laughed at him, and Allah rescued everyone who believed. You can ask your child: "How do you think Nuh felt when people laughed at him?" or "When is it hard for you to be patient?" Keep the flood part gentle for younger children, emphasizing rescue, safety, and the animals on the ark rather than frightening details. The story is a wonderful way to talk about sticking with the right choice even when it is hard.
