In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Say: O you who do not believe,
I do not worship what you worship,
and you do not worship what I worship.
I will never worship what you worship,
and you will not worship what I worship.
You have your religion, and I have mine.
About Al-Kafirun
Al-Kafirun means "the disbelievers". One day in Mecca, the leaders of Quraysh came to the Prophet ﷺ with an offer: you worship our idols for one year, and we will worship your Allah for one year. They thought faith was something you could trade, like swapping toys.
This surah was the answer. Six verses, said calmly and without any anger, that mean: what I worship and what you worship are not the same thing, and they never will be. Then it ends — "You have your religion, and I have mine." No shouting. No insults. Just a line drawn, kindly and clearly.
For children, Al-Kafirun teaches something they will need their whole lives: you can be completely sure of what you believe and completely kind to people who believe something else. Being different from your friends is okay. You do not have to copy someone to be nice to them.
The Prophet ﷺ often recited Al-Kafirun and Al-Ikhlas together — in the two sunnah rakats before Fajr, in the two after Maghrib, and before going to sleep. The two make a beautiful pair: Al-Kafirun says what we do not worship, and Al-Ikhlas says exactly Who we do.

What does Al-Kafirun mean?
Al-Kafirun (الكافرون) means "the disbelievers" or "those who reject faith."
The surah is named after the people the Prophet ﷺ was told to address in the very first verse: "Say: O you who do not believe."
What is Surah Al-Kafirun about?
It is a calm, clear statement that Muslims worship Allah alone and will not mix that worship with anything else.
It does not tell anyone to be rude or hostile. It draws a line about belief and then ends peacefully: "You have your religion, and I have mine."
How long is Surah Al-Kafirun?
Al-Kafirun is six short verses long and takes about 20 seconds to recite. It is the 109th surah of the Quran and was revealed in Mecca.
Because several verses repeat with only small changes, most children can memorize it within a week.
Why was Surah Al-Kafirun revealed?
The leaders of Quraysh came to the Prophet ﷺ with a deal: he would worship their idols for a year, and they would worship Allah for a year. This surah was revealed as his answer.
It is a polite but completely firm no, and it shows that faith is not something to trade away.
Does Al-Kafirun teach kids to dislike people of other religions?
No, and this is worth saying clearly to children. The surah separates beliefs, not people. It says "you have your religion, and I have mine" and then stops.
The Quran elsewhere commands Muslims to be just and kind to people who believe differently. The lesson is: be firm about what you believe, and gentle with everyone you meet.
When is Surah Al-Kafirun recited in prayer?
The Prophet ﷺ often recited Al-Kafirun together with Al-Ikhlas in the two sunnah rakats before Fajr and in the two sunnah rakats after Maghrib. It was also his habit to recite it before sleeping.
It is a wonderful first pair for a child to learn.
How can my child memorize Al-Kafirun?
Al-Kafirun is one of the easiest surahs to memorize because verses 3 and 5 are identical, and verses 2 and 4 are close. Point that repetition out to your child, and it stops feeling like six new verses.
Play the recitation daily and let them finish each line. Most children have it within a week.
