About Al-Kawthar

Al-Kawthar means "abundance", which means a very large amount of good. It is the 108th surah, and the shortest surah in the whole Quran: just three verses and ten words. Even though it is tiny, its message is huge.

Allah tells the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) that He has given him al-Kawthar, an abundance of good that includes a beautiful river in Paradise. In return, the surah asks us to do two things to show our thanks: pray to our Lord, and give (sacrifice) for His sake.

This surah was revealed to comfort the Prophet during a hard time. Some people who disliked him said he would be forgotten. Allah answered that the Prophet has been given so much, while the ones who hate him are the ones who will be left with nothing.
