Quran
Which surahs to learn first
Start with Al-Fatiha, because it is recited in every prayer. Then the three Quls, starting with Al-Ikhlas, and then four more short surahs. Eight surahs, in the order many families teach them.
The order
First
The three Quls
- 2Al-IkhlasThe Sincerity · 4 verses · About Allah’s onenessالإخلاص
- 3Al-FalaqThe Daybreak · 5 verses · Seeking protectionالفلق
- 4An-NasMankind · 6 verses · Seeking protectionالناس
Four more
How to learn them
Listening is the most powerful tool. Play the surah audio often, during car rides, before bed, or while playing. Children absorb the rhythm and sounds naturally.
Once they recognize the tune, recite a verse out loud and have them echo it back. Praise small wins. Memorization is a habit, not a sprint.
Common questions
Which surahs should children learn first?
Most Muslim families start with Al-Fatiha (the opening), because it is recited in every prayer.
After that, kids often learn the short surahs near the end of the Quran: Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas (called the three Quls). These are short, beautiful, and easy to memorize.
Why do children start with Juz Amma?
Its surahs are the shortest in the Quran, so a young child can finish one in a sitting and feel it. They also rhyme heavily, which makes them stick.
Just as importantly, these are the surahs recited most often in prayer — so what a child learns here is used straight away, five times a day, rather than saved for later.
